Manuka Honey MGO 65+

Manuka honey is slowly but surely taking over the world as a creamy, tasty wonder of nature. Everyone from the United States to China swears by the unique benefits of this delicious honey.

Scientists have concluded that not all honey is made equally. Different honey has different properties depending on the nectar variety harvested by the bees. This blog will outline exactly what the medicinal uses of pure Manuka honey are and the proposed benefits.

The Origins of Manuka

The use of Manuka in traditional healing in Aotearoa New Zealand goes back many years. Commonly known as Rongoa in Maori, these traditional methods included using surrounding nature to heal. Many parts of the Manuka tree would be used to treat inflammation, burns and wounds.

Moreover, the Manuka tree leaves were used to make tea for Captain James Cook’s crew suffering from scurvy. Rimu twigs could even be mixed in to create beer. Since the dawn of New Zealand, Manuka has been used to boost health.

What Properties of The Manuka Flower Make Manuka Honey So Unique?

While all honey does contain nutrients like protein, vitamins, minerals, and more, a few ingredients make Manuka honey a step above all others. These ingredients include:

1. Methylglyoxal (MGO)

2. Leptosperin

3. Dihydroxyacetone (DHA)

Each of these compounds plays an essential role in giving customers the unique benefits of this liquid gold. MGO is the star ingredient that contributes to Manuka honey’s antibacterial properties. Commonly used as a daily energy boost, facial mask or natural health ingredient, 100% pure New Zealand Manuka honey is a treat for the entire body.

What Health Benefits Can Manuka Honey Bring?

Assist in Wound Healing

Thanks to the antibacterial activity of MGO, monofloral Manuka honey has shown promising results in decreasing bacteria levels. Natural health advocates swear by pure Manuka honey as a skin dressing for wounds.

Furthermore, Manuka honey has peroxide activity which also assists in the elimination of bacteria. Some scientists have even speculated that there may be anti-inflammatory benefits to using Manuka honey.

Assist in Sore Throats & Coughs

Winter wellness is an essential aspect of keeping healthy during the cold season. Sore throats and coughs can arise at the most annoying times, so it’s good for people to be prepared. Lozenges are excellent to keep Manuka honey in the mouth longer to soothe throats and coughs.

There have been reports that genuine Manuka honey can inhibit the growth of “strep”, which is the bacteria responsible for strep throat. A lozenge allows the Manuka honey to stay in the mouth much longer and reach the inflamed area. This is the best way to consume Manuka honey to improve a sore throat.

Assist in Oral Care

Gingivitis affects 33% of New Zealanders and arises when they don’t clean their teeth, floss, and regularly visit the dentist. Although honey is sweet and almost seems harmful to teeth, Manuka honey has been measured to have anti-inflammatory properties and has been shown to reduce gingivitis.

MANUKA HONEY BENEFITS

Manuka honey is a complex honey that goes far beyond a simple table honey.

We like to think of it as the ultimate combo of plant power and bee magic –the powerful properties of the Manuka tree combined with the goodness of honey.

Manuka honey has been the focus of extensive  evidencing remarkable natural qualities that set it apart from other honeys.

Look for MGO  certification on the label to help select the right grade for your needs. The higher the number the higher the MGO potency (MGO is what makes Manuka honey so special).

Manuka Honey & Wellbeing

As much as we’d love to, due to New Zealand’s food regulations we’re unable to talk about health applications and effects of Manuka honey.

We know Manuka honey is a family favorite because people tell us this all the time! Fans tell us they like to use it as a winter wellbeing remedy, a natural boost or as a wholefood alternative to refined sugar.

Get the most out of your Manuka

Spoon it, slather it, drizzle it, stir it – Manuka honey is versatile, simple to use and tastes delicious.

The best way to enjoy it is right off the spoon or mixed in warm water, tea or coffee. It makes a great replacement for refined sugar, and is the perfect accompaniment to breakfast foods and smoothies.

Manuka honey provides a natural boost pre or post workout, makes for a wholesome treat in the  kid’s lunches and is the perfect pick-me-up that won’t crash you down.

It’s also a great treat for your skin.

Manuka honey can be enjoyed by the whole family (over 1 yr of age).

Storage Tips

All our honeys are 100% natural and as such the colour, texture and taste can vary slightly from batch to batch and can develop with age (just like fine wine).

Manuka honey should be stored in the pantry, not in the fridge. Cold temperatures can result in crystallisation of the honey (but don’t worry, the honey is still fine to eat).

Avoid exposure to prolonged high heat to protect the natural properties of the honey.

Pro tip – if ants love your Manuka honey as much as you do, keep the jar in a shallow dish of water (ants can’t swim!).
